If you haven’t experienced the characteristic burning, aching, and sour feeling of heartburn, you may not know what to look for. Here, you’ll learn what heartburn feels like and how long you can expect your symptoms to last – and if you’re experiencing heartburn or another, more serious health issue.
What does heartburn feel like?
The common symptoms of heartburn are:
Burning feeling in the chest, which worsens when you bend down
Burning in the throat
Coughing and wheezing
A sour, bitter taste in the back of your throat
A feeling as though food is stuck in the back of your throat, causing pain
The above symptoms are generally not cause for concern. But if you experience any of the following symptoms, you may have something more serious than heartburn:
Shortness of breath
A sudden “squeezing” or tight sensation in your chest or arms
Extreme discomfort when eating
If you experience any of the above, contact your doctor immediately as you may be experiencing a serious health event.
How long do symptoms of heartburn last?
Without treatment, mild heartburn can last as few as ten minutes but usually lasts about two hours.
If you experience heartburn rarely, you may not need treatment. However, frequent heartburn (2 or more days per week) can impact quality of life. If you believe you are experiencing frequent heartburn, there are treatment options available (link to How To Stop Heartburn article) like Prilosec OTC.
